Grace Among Us – Part Two
The Name above Every Name – Luke 1:32-33

Intro
- What a beautiful name, what a wonderful name, what a powerful name it is. The name of Jesus, which is above every name and the only name given by which we must be saved (Phil 2:9-11, Acts 4:12).
- This name was first heard on earth spoken from the mouth of an angelic messenger named Gabriel to a young girl named Mary in a backwoods little town named Nazareth. This girl was to be married to an upright man named Joseph, who was a descendant of the great king named David.
- This young girl named Mary, who was highly favored, was told that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit, and He was to be named “Jesus” (Luke 1:31). The angel went on to explain to this young girl named Mary what this name of Jesus means and who this Son will be to her, to you, and to all the nations.
Luke 1:32-33 NIV
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.
He will be great
- And this is true. Who knew that a boy born in a distant nation over two thousand years ago would be known and proclaimed and revered and worshipped throughout all generations and nations. His name is greater than all the names that have been given to men. Even though He has not written any books, His words are read by billions. Even though He did not own anything of value, He possesses everything that is created. He had no influential friends, but He is the greatest of all influencers. He was crucified like a common criminal and buried in a borrowed grave, and He is the only one who overcame death itself and offers eternal life to others. The one who cannot change, changes everything. He is the greatest of all those who have been given the name “great.”
He will be called the Son of the Most High
- He will not be known as the son of Joseph or the son of Mary. He will be known as the one and only Son of the Most High. And if you were Mary and you heard this, it would blow your mind. Every person is precious and unique, but no one is as precious and unique as Jesus. The Holy Spirit, through the writing of Paul, describes Him this way:

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.
- If you want to see the Father, then you need to look at the Son. He is the “spitting image” of the Father. He existed before all things, He is above all things, He is beyond all things, and in Him, all things hold together. He is completely unlike us as God and completely like us as a man but without sin.
He will be given the throne of David
- He is the promised King over all Kings. He is a greater King than the greatest king that has ever reigned. David was told that from His descendants would be one who would reign eternally (2 Sam. 7:12-13). The people of God had been looking and longing for this King to finally reign. And this child born to a girl named Mary, was proclaimed to be the one they were longing for. This child named Jesus was the one who would sit on David’s throne. This child named Jesus was the one to whom all of the scripture pointed. He will be the true King, the King who is righteous and true, wise and strong, the healer, the helper, the restorer, the redeemer and just and the justifier, the deliver and the conqueror. He is above David because He is before David and will sit on His throne because it is given to Him, because He is the only one worthy.
He will be over Jacob’s descendants
- He will rule and reign over Jacob’s descendants forever. He is the rightful ruler over the people of God. He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the head of the class, and the head of the family of God. The brother of all and the Father of all. All of the people of God, the church which has become the family of God, will have Him as their head. He is the one who is over us, and for this, we can be thankful. He is our strength. He is our song. He is our hope. He is our life. He is our one and only King whose reign is truth and grace.
He will be King forever
- His Kingdom will never, ever end. It is established forever. The Kingdom was given to the one who will never die and has the keys to both death and hell. There will be no other king. We will be secure and blessed and eternally happy in the kingdom with the truest and greatest of all kings.
Conclusion
- He is the hope for all the ages. His name is the name above all names. He is grace among us. No other name in heaven and earth was given by which we must be saved. What a beautiful name, what a wonderful name, what a powerful name it is, that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:10-11). Understand how truly great is His name. Receive Him. Crown Him. Love Him. Reverence Him. Honor Him. Worship Him. Know Him. Magnify Him.
- That night was indeed a holy night, and we will conclude our service with that song. Let us pray together.
